N MODERN industry, productivity, quality, reliability and safety heavily depend on the performance of the applied sensors. They ensure an interface between the production equipment and the surrounding world, and also provide a feedback for the result of the executed operations. Thus, sensors can be found in extremely wide range of applications and play a fairly important role in industrial system. Especially, with the coming new technology wave of “Internet of Things” (IoT), smart sensors are not only expected to change dramatically the system design of the traditional industrial applications, but they will also enable a number of new emerging applications. However, such applications also place greater challenges on smart sensors and the overall sensor system design. The solutions for these challenges ask for new developments in all aspects of smart sensors and systems. The aim of this Special Section is to provide a platform for researchers and designers to share and showcase their latest developments on the topic of smart sensors for industrial applications.
